Battery Management Tips

*UPS battery replacements must only be the type specified by the manufacturer. Never mix old and new batteries unless approved by a manufacturer.

*Sealed maintenance-free batteries must never be overcharged, only use the charger specified by the manufactured. If the charger automatic shut-off feature appears to have a problem, replace the charger. Never connect a cheap automobile battery charger to refresh an AGM or Gel cell battery.

*Battery tops must be clean and free of grime. When the tops are dirty, currents migrate between terminals causing longer recharging and a shorter service life.

*When removed from service for an extended time, use a microprocessor controlled battery maintainer to avoid damage from inactivity. When a UPS sits idle for an extended time-period, restart the power supply at least every two weeks with a minimum load for at least 8 hours and recharge the battery string.

*When wet batteries require water additions, use only distilled water. Never let the water drop below the top of the plates.

Batteries in Series

Standby battery systems typically start at 12 volts with 24, 36 and larger systems in use. Batteries installed for standby typically use a series circuit. Some large battery piles work in a combination series-parallel circuit. Battery management electronic circuitry monitors cells effectively with batteries wired in series.
